Concordances

Bible concordances are books which list words in their context.

The most popular concordance of English words is Strong’s, with Cruden’s and Young’s less well known and used.

Strong’s concordance lists all the English words that are used in the King James Version, and links them to the passages they occur in. The English words are also linked to the Hebrew and Greek words from which they are translated. The Hebrew and Greek words all have numbers, and each has a description of the source and meaning of the word.

A search for the English word ‘love’ would show that it occurs in both the Old and New Testaments, and comes from 5 different Hebrew words and 3 Greek words. Being able to examine these root Hebrew and Greek words helps expand our understanding of what the original passages meant.

There are now Strong’s concordances for modern English versions, such as the NIV.

Bible concordances are also available for Hebrew and Greek words, with the Englishman’s Hebrew and Greek being the most useful. However, to be able to obtain the most benefit from these you need to at least be able to read Hebrew and Greek letters.
