"...it’s not just Emperor Karl’s attempts to make peace towards the end of the war that are being honoured here. I see it as a much larger phenomenon. If you will, in the larger sense, it’s the entire Hapsburg dynasty, 650 years of them, reigning in central Europe; it’s the fact that the descendents of Emperor Charles (as I prefer to call him)- he died in Madeira in 1922 at the age of 34 - his eldest son, Otto, named for Otto’s grandfather who happened to be the brother of Franz Ferdinand, Otto von Hapsburg has had a distinguished career for the last 40 years. He’s now in his 90s, he carried on certain ideals of the Hapsburgs in post World War II Europe, including the Pan-European movement, he was a representative in the European Council in Strasburg, he’s had a distinguished career. And I would argue, he is being honoured in this beatification as a continuator of the peace policies that are ascribed to his father. That’s one dimension...."
